Have you ever had the opportunity to watch the sunset over the ocean?

It’s like the whole world slows down as you experience nature with your senses. You breathe in the salty air as you hear the sound of waves crashing along the shore. You feel the gritty sand between your toes and watch in awe as the sky brilliantly transforms.

It’s calming AND energizing.

It’s magical.

Every time I practice yoga I experience that same magic and so can you.

And it’s all about that breath.

And it’s actually not magic, it’s scientifically proven that connecting with and controlling your breath does wonders for your physical and mental state. The action of yoga on our physiology is primarily through breathing and awareness. Without them, poses and movements remain just exercises. Linking mindful breath with movement…that is when the magic happens!

Deep breathing increases activity in the vagus nerve, which is the dominate component of the parasympathetic nervous system.  In essence, you turn off the “I’m stressed, anxious and scared!” switch.  This decreases mental and emotional stress.

Taking in more oxygen improves circulation, blood flow and organ function

Conscious breathing keeps you in the PRESENT; improving focus and mental clarity.

Deep mindful exhalations help detox the body by helping the lymphatic system function properly, which encourages the release of harmful toxins. This cleanses the body and allows it to direct its energy to more productive functions.

Mindful breathing can help reduce tension, tightness, discomfort and pain.

Watchful breathing lowers your blood pressure and slows the heart rate.  Try out your “Breathe” app on your Apple Watch and see for yourself!

Deep breathing triggers the release of endorphins, which raises serotonin levels and improves feelings of well being.

Breathing exercises can help you unwind and relax which allows you to fall asleep quicker and sleep deeper.

Maybe you’ve never had the opportunity to witness the majestic sun setting over the teal blue sea, but you can experience that same magical feeling of all your troubles melting away every time you hit the mat and practice yoga.

“Yoga is not about touching your toes. It’s about unlocking your ideas about what you want, where you think you can go and what you’ll achieve when you get there.”
