Episode 19: Listen to Understand
When was 16, I was given advice from a very wise person who knows me better than myself. And that advice was this, “Alli, listen to understand. You will be tempted to listen to answer, but if you listen to understand you will develop empathy and compassion and be great force for good in this world.”
Listen to understand.
These three words have been my companion for 26 years.
Karl Mennige once said, “Listening is a magnetic and strange thing. A creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand.”
Today I talk about why listening helps us grow, why listening to understand is so important and 10 ways you can start developing the skill of active listening.
1. Be present.
2. Be open minded.
3. Be respectful & empathetic.
4. Ask open ended questions.
5. Show you are listening.
6. Be genuine.
7. Don't interrupt.
8. Don't hesitate to ask someone to repeat something.
9. Listen to understand yourself.
10. Don't wait for a convenient time.
